The Ultimate Guide to Hotels in Sausalito: Where to Stay and How to Choose the Right One

Expert opinion · June 28, 2026 · Nikita Khandheria

Sausalito is one of those places that surprises people. Visitors often arrive expecting to spend a few hours walking along the waterfront before heading back to San Francisco. Instead, they find themselves wishing they had booked another night.

Between the waterfront restaurants, art galleries, ferry rides, houseboats, hiking trails, and views of the San Francisco skyline, Sausalito has become a destination in its own right. As a company that hosts weddings, corporate events, and celebrations here throughout the year, one of the questions we answer most often is surprisingly simple.

"Where should our guests stay?"

The answer depends entirely on what kind of trip you're planning.

Some hotels are designed for anniversaries and romantic weekends. Others are ideal for business travelers or guests attending weddings. Some are worth booking for the view alone, while others offer exceptional value because you'll spend most of your time exploring town instead of sitting in your room.

Here's our guide to every major hotel in Sausalito and what each one does exceptionally well.

The Inn Above Tide

Best For: Luxury travelers, anniversaries, proposals, honeymoon weekends

Typical Nightly Rate: Approximately $700–$1,500+

If your goal is to book the hotel people talk about years later, this is probably it.

The Inn Above Tide has become synonymous with luxury in Sausalito because every room faces San Francisco Bay. Guests wake up looking directly across the water toward the city skyline, Alcatraz, and Angel Island from private decks built over the bay itself. Complimentary breakfast, evening wine and cheese, and its location just steps from downtown consistently stand out as highlights for visitors.

The experience feels intimate rather than grand. With only a few dozen rooms, the hotel has earned a reputation for attentive service and a peaceful atmosphere that appeals particularly to couples.

If you're celebrating something significant, whether it's an engagement, honeymoon, anniversary, or milestone birthday, this is the property we recommend most often.

Casa Madrona Hotel & Spa

Best For: Wedding guests, boutique luxury, visitors who want to experience downtown Sausalito

Typical Nightly Rate: Approximately $450–$1,200

Casa Madrona has been part of Sausalito's history since the nineteenth century and continues to be one of the town's best-known boutique hotels. Perched on the hillside overlooking the marina, it combines historic architecture with modern accommodations and places guests within walking distance of restaurants, shops, galleries, and the ferry.

One thing worth knowing before booking is that the property sits on a hillside. That elevation creates beautiful views, but room layouts, sizes, and access vary because the hotel occupies a historic property. If having a particular type of room or easy accessibility is important, it's worth discussing those preferences directly with the hotel before your stay.

Casa Madrona is especially popular with wedding guests because visitors can enjoy an entire weekend in Sausalito without ever needing to drive.

Cavallo Point Lodge

Best For: Executive retreats, luxury vacations, wellness weekends, destination weddings

Typical Nightly Rate: Approximately $600–$1,400

Technically located at Fort Baker just outside downtown Sausalito, Cavallo Point offers a very different experience from the hotels in the center of town.

Instead of being surrounded by restaurants and shops, guests are immersed in national parkland at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge. The property occupies beautifully restored historic military buildings alongside contemporary accommodations and is known for its spa, wellness programming, restaurant, and exceptional views of both the bridge and San Francisco.

Many guests choose Cavallo Point because it feels like a resort. It's quiet, spacious, and ideal if your priority is relaxation rather than being steps away from downtown nightlife.

For executive retreats and destination weddings, it's difficult to think of another property in the Bay Area that offers a similar setting.

Hotel Sausalito

Best For: Travelers who want to walk everywhere, ferry access, weekend visitors

Typical Nightly Rate: Approximately $250–$500

Hotel Sausalito offers something many visitors value more than luxury amenities: location.

Situated directly in the heart of downtown, the hotel places guests within a short walk of the ferry terminal, waterfront restaurants, boutiques, cafés, and many of the attractions that define Sausalito. Built in 1915, it remains one of the town's historic properties and has long been known for its family-run atmosphere.

Guests who stay here generally aren't looking for a resort experience. They're looking for a comfortable place to sleep while spending the rest of the day exploring everything Sausalito has to offer.

If you plan to arrive by ferry from San Francisco or spend most of your trip walking, Hotel Sausalito is an excellent option.

The Gables Inn

Best For: Couples, boutique hotel lovers, quiet romantic weekends

Typical Nightly Rate: Approximately $325–$650

The Gables Inn feels more like a traditional bed and breakfast than a conventional hotel.

With only fifteen rooms, many featuring fireplaces, spa tubs, and bay views, the property appeals to travelers looking for a quieter and more intimate stay. Guests often mention the welcoming atmosphere, complimentary wine and cheese hour, and the historic character that sets it apart from larger hotels.

If you enjoy boutique hotels where the experience feels personal rather than corporate, The Gables Inn is well worth considering.

Which Hotel Should You Choose?

Every hotel in Sausalito offers something different, and that's one of the reasons the town is such a special place to visit.

If luxury is your priority, The Inn Above Tide remains one of the finest waterfront hotels anywhere in Northern California.

If you're planning to explore downtown on foot, Casa Madrona and Hotel Sausalito both place you in the center of everything.

If you're looking for a peaceful resort with exceptional views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Cavallo Point is difficult to beat.

If you prefer historic boutique properties with a quieter atmosphere, The Gables Inn is an excellent choice.

Attending an Event at ERIA?

Many of our wedding couples and corporate clients ask where their guests should stay.

If your guests want to make a weekend out of their trip, we typically recommend staying in downtown Sausalito. Everything is within walking distance, including restaurants, coffee shops, the waterfront promenade, local boutiques, and ERIA Sausalito. Guests can enjoy the town before the event, walk to the celebration, and spend the following morning exploring without worrying about transportation.

One of the things we love most about hosting events in Sausalito is that the celebration rarely ends when the music does. People linger for breakfast, spend another afternoon by the water, and leave feeling as though they discovered one of California's most beautiful waterfront towns.

That's exactly what makes Sausalito special.
